Guardian Angel
Easy Action EARS064
Easy Action have disinterred yet another musical chapter in the life of Detroit kingpin Scott Morgan. This release covers the period 1971-1972 when he was lead vocalist with a fine five piece called Guardian Angel. This CD features all nine of their studio recordings, complemented by an equal number of live songs. Recording quality is high throughout, with the live tracks sounding as good their studio counterparts, due to their bring recorded on a 16 track mobile. Guardian Angel mixed Scott’s originals with a selection of cool soul/r’n’b covers and it’s the Ike & Tina and Delaney & Bonnie numbers that stand out.. The band share common ground with contemporaries J Geils and the interplay of guitarists Jeff Jones and Al Jacquez is reminiscent of Sticky Fingers or Teenage Head. The band play with enthusiasm and restraint – solos are sharp, arrangements are tight and there is no showing off. Such discretion was not rewarded by commercial success, but Guardian Angel deserved better and thanks to Easy Action they finally get their moment in the sun.
