About
Only Rock ‘n’ Roll had its genesis in 1975 when a youthful Simon Wright started playing records at his college disco in support of live acts who varied from The Troggs to The Sex Pistols.
Since then he has amassed a collection of around 1750 vintage vinyl singles. The next step was DJing at a friends birthday party in Sussex: the result was Only Rock ‘n’ Roll, named in homage to Ray Lowry (RIP) and his groundbreaking NME column of the same name (www.raylowry.com). Today Only Rock ‘n’ Roll is the soundtrack of choice for folks of a certain age and of an Uncut / Radio Six persuasion.
Recent bookings have included London venues such as the Shepherds Bush Empire, Camden Koko, the Scala, the Garage and the Roundhouse as well as The Band On The Wall in Manchester. Bands that Simon has worked with include The Only Ones, The Flamin’ Groovies, The Replacements, Mott The Hoople, The Cheaters and Bash & Pop. Since 1986 Simon has written about the rock’n’roll that intrigues and inspires him and you can find a selection of his writing here, as well as in legendary punk/psyche fanzine Bucketfull Of Brains
